Africa’s e-commerce giant, konga just began their black Friday today. The black Friday is termed ‘yakata 2016’. Yakata literally means something big falling in a big way, a reference to the huge price discounts that would hit the online store starting from today. This year’s black Friday will be holding from Nov 18th- 21st.
Last year’s black Friday recorded massive sales and revenue on the platform, with the in-house team processing about 2700 orders per hour (about 100 laptop orders per hour) selling tens of thousands of items within a 24 hour period. This year, konga has announced its plans to make as much as $8million dollars during the black Friday, making it the biggest black Friday in Nigerian history.
Already prices are being slashed off items on the store now, and some fashion items I saw last week have received as much as 80% cut in price. Mobile phones and laptops are getting 4-12% discounts too. Going by last year report, more orders will be made in the laptop and smartphone categories, followed by fashion, but we are still uncertain of the brand that will come out overall winner.
Amidst a challenging economic climate this year, konga CEO, Shola Adekoya remains optimistic for a memorable black Friday. He said:
“We are expecting a buoyant Black Friday or, as we like to call it, Yakata, 2016. Just like Black Friday in the West, Yakata kicks off the holiday shopping season for us retailers. As millions of Nigerians are feeling the pinch financially, we know that they will be looking out for the very best value for their money, and will be visiting Konga to source the best deals. Our customer service teams are already receiving hundreds of queries a day concerning what offers we will be offering this year, so we have strong indications as to what our shrewd shoppers are on the lookout for.”
“Our 60,000+ merchants are mobilized and ready to sell their stock at super-heavily discounted prices to our one million+ customers throughout Nigeria. As e-commerce continues to grow at a furious pace in Nigeria, we are prepared for a massive influx of traffic, primarily from mobile, from both existing and new customers, who will benefit from the largest range of consumer goods online, as well as speedy and reliable order fulfilment”.
Konga really set the stage for this years ‘yakata’ shopping spree when they began the warehousing project which moved all goods from their merchants into konga warehouses handing over delivery responsibilities to the konga in-house team. This cut down delivery time by 90%.
