How does it sound? Groundbreaking? Shocking? Unbelievable? Oh! You think all the toothpicks you have been using were produced here in Nigeria? No. They’ve all been imported by rich moguls. But maybe that stuff is coming to an end soon(I said maybe!). Akwa Ibom state has commissioned a new toothpick and pencil manufacturing house.
As part of a number of activities lined up to mark the second anniversary of his administration, Governors Udom Emmanuel has just commissioned a plant to churn out made-in-Nigeria pencils and toothpicks. During the ceremony, he pointed out that for a country of roughly 170 million people and heaven knows how many teeth, it is shamefully unacceptable for Nigeria to be importing toothpicks.
And so, his state has decided to give us something to boast about. The first company to refine the nation’s vast forest resources into toothpicks and pencils for writing. This is an accelerated movement towards reports that initially projected that Nigeria would start producing pencils in 2018.
My own opinion, to whom it may concern
Personally… I doubt if a Nigerian government (local, state or federal) can manage such a manufacturing enterprise. I think it is better left in the hands of private individuals. I mean, that manufacturing firm for pencils and toothpicks, now located in Akwa Ibom should be privatized, before corruption and mismanagement kills it. Hope I’m not being too rude?
