February 2017 saw the launch of a startup that should solve the growing issue of accessing quality health care services in Nigeria. Founded by three Nigerians, MediServe is a web app that grants Nigerians access to quality health care services across the country through the internet. MediServe is accessible by every Nigeria through a mobile phone or a computer that is internet enabled.
The platform has a comprehensive list of medical personal available across Nigerians including ophtamologists, pediatricians, pathologists, therapists, primary and private health care centers and other specialists.
How it works
Individuals can visit the platform on the website, sign up on the platform and search for medical services across a variety of categories. The database of hospitals and practitioners is a vast one and users can book appointments, seek consultation from medics that are online, he the contact details of medical practitioners etc. There is also a forum where users can connect with each other and engage in discussions relating to health.
What I think
This web app is a welcome development, just as its predecessor Hudibia. One tough issue Nigeria’s health sector is facing is the issue of patients not being able to access good health care. However, Hudibia beats it in a particular, using Hudibia, a patient can actually book an appointment in his or her home. This is very valuable in the case of emergencies. I also feel these MediServe founders should quickly launch an android app that can also be helpful even when the user is offline. It is not all the time users are able to access the internet in Nigeria, in case of serious emergency, the network may decide to have a mind of its own and the essence of the app made futile.
